SHADOWPLAY series, 2014
This is a generational series of paintings, each referencing the painting that was made before it. The Shadowplay Series addresses the inevitable erosion of image through technological reproduction, and its influence on our understanding of the tradition of painting throughout art history. This series of paintings spawned from images of Bridget Riley paintings found on the Internet, printed with an inexpensive printer that had an insufficient ink supply. I used the degraded interpretations from my printer as a starting point.
Within each work, there is repetition of an earlier idea, as well as a reference to the reoccurrence of geometric abstraction as a genre in Art history from Malevich to Stella to Bridget Riley and Peter Halley. This exploration has brought me to realize the more something is repeated, the more it changes. That ultimately, repetition is variation.
